Japanese TV star, comedian, and sophomore director “Beat” Takeshi Kitano added screenwriter to his resume for his second feature, the offbeat story of meek, passive gas station attendant and benchwarming minor-leagu baseball player Masaki (Masahiko Ono), who finally rebels against the insults and abuse. His timing couldn’t be worse, however, for he lashes out against an ill-mannered yakuza soldier. When the local crime boss embarks on a campaign of harassment and beatings aimed at Masaki’s coworkers and baseball teammates, Masaki flies off to Yokohama to buy a gun, and falls in with a charismatic but brutal gangster (Takeshi) who has his own score to settle with the yakuza. Perhaps Kitano’s most obliqu film, Boiling Point is made up primarily of digressions, notably the rambling middle, where Takeshi’s disgraced mobster takes Masaki and his pal on a tour of local nightlife, a sequnce of pokerfaced gags and dry, ironic humor twisted around Takeshi’s brutal, misogynist antics. The film lacks the drive and compelling narrative of Takeshi’s other gangster pictures (notably his masterpiece, Sonatine, which revives many of the cinematic ideas first explored in this film), but rises to life in some astounding sequnces: a flashforward delivered as an adrenaline rush of images, the chilling yet comic eruption of a bouqut of flowers, and an underplayed apocalyptic climax, followed by a tender coda. –Sean Axmaker

It’s not surprising that My Big Fat Greek Wedding grew more popular over the course of its theatrical release (whereas most blockbusters open big and then drop precipitously)–not only does it have believable situations and engaging characters, but these characters (particularly our romantic heroine, Toula, played by writer and performer Nia Vardalos) look like actual human beings instead of plastic movie stars. The result is the very accessible tale of Greek-American Toula (whose family sees her as over the hill at 30), who falls for a WASPy guy named Ian (John Corbett) and then has to endure the outrage, doubt, and ultimate acceptance of her deeply ethnically centered family. The actors invest their wildly stereotypical portrayals with sincerity and compassion, giving the movie an honest warmth instead of Hollywood schmaltz. But My Big Fat Greek Wedding ultimately succeeds because of Vardalos; her intelligent, down-to-earth presence and charm carry the film. –Bret Fetzer

Mikako and Noboru are separated at the beginning of high school in 2046. She’s accepted into the training program for mecha pilots to fight the aliens who attacked human settlements on Mars. As she moves across the miles and, ultimately, light years, she sends messages that the forlorn Noboru patiently awaits. The animation is largely restricted to camera moves over still artwork and CG objects, but Shinkai is a skillful enough director to tell this melancholy sci-fi romance through the strong music and vocal tracks. Voices of a Distant Star packs more of an emotional punch than many elaborate studio films. (Rated 13 and older, but suitable for viewers 2 years younger: minor violence) –Charles Solomon

The Doobie Brothers’ harmony singing is spot-on, the playing is righteous, the band rocks, there’s plenty of interview material between songs (and a music-only option for those who prefer to get right to the point)… and to top it off, some of the proceeds of which go the Wildlife Conservation Society.
